The Pride of
the Foundation can be said to be its small
but efficient library which has books
ranging from information on the mining and
metal industry to affairs relating to labour
and books on labour laws. Journals,
periodicals and newsletters from trade
unions from all over the globe are also
available for reference. So far this library
has been somewhat confined to GLF’s own
teaching staff, faculty-members, seminar
participants, although, frequently, other
research scholars, social scientists, and
students of the mining industry also avail
of the facilities provided here. The library
however is open to any person genuinely
interested in labour related affairs and
trade union activities.
In this
library one can come across several
publications of GLF itself. And talking of
publications one man at GLF stands outs. He
is Mr. A. N. Jha, closely associated with
GLF since its inception and presently its
Joint Secretary. Mr. Jha is also In-charge
of GLF’s Publication Department. Another of
Mr. Jha’s pre-occupation is editing GLF’s
mouthpiece, a fortnightly Hindi journal,
Shram Pratishtha. The journal also takes out
six special issues in English every year –
on Republic day, May day, Independence day,
Gandhi Jayanti, Peace Day (14th November),
and Women day (8th March). The journal keeps
the workers updated on the various news and
issues affecting the lives and working
conditions of mine & metal workers in
particular and workers in general across the
world.
At
present, the infrastructure available here
is being made use of to run the multifarious
activities of GLF. The facilities include:
Seminar/Conference halls well equipped with
tools for organizing educational and
training programmes; a hostel for boarding
and lodging purposes. We are using solar
energy for lighting and heating purposes.
The duly started diary not only provides
milk for our canteen but also provides the
raw material to run the bio-gas plant which
supplies fuel to the kitchen. In addition,
it gives us manure for the kitchen garden
we are developing to meet our requirements
of fruits and vegetables
